When walking to and from the bus stop, it’s important to know what’s going on around you. The Bee offers the following pedestrian safety tips to help keep you safe around bus stops.

Bee Safe

• Wait at the bus stop.
• Bus drivers only pick up and drop off at designated bus stops.
• Don’t stand at the curb’s edge.
• Turning vehicles may come too close.
• Be patient and arrive ten minutes early.
• Make sure the bus stops before you approach it.
• Never run after or alongside a moving bus once it has left the bus stop.
• Play it safe and wait for the next one.
• Don’t cross the street in front of a bus.
• Let the bus leave the bus stop before you cross the street.
• Don’t let children play near buses.
• Pushing, shoving, and running can cause accidents.

Bee Seen

• Be bright at dawn, dusk and night.
• Carry a flashlight and wear something that’s bright, light colored or reflective.
• Stay in well-lit areas, especially, when crossing the street.
• Cross at intersections or crosswalks.
• Cars might not see you mid-block.
• Make sure drivers and bicyclists see you.
• Make eye contact when crossing and be sure they have plenty of time to see you.

Bee Aware

• Always look left, right and left again, when crossing.
• Be aware of the traffic and others around you.
• Use sidewalks when you can.
• No sidewalk? Walk facing traffic and in a single file.
• Obey the traffic signals.
• Cross on “WALK” or on a fresh green light.
• Don’t use your phone when crossing.
• Distracted walking, especially texting, is dangerous.
• Prevent slips and falls.
• Dress for walking. Wear comfortable shoes and make sure your shoe laces are tied.

To celebrate Older Americans Month the Westchester Bee-Line Bus System is honoring seniors with free rides every Wednesday in May.

Find your ride to recreation, shopping, parks, entertainment and more. Our buses are clean, comfortable and accommodating of seniors in wheelchairs.

Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation staff will be on site at the below events to provide you with information on all of your transportation needs.

Salute to Seniors will be bringing the information to your neighborhood this year. Visit any of the three Information and Community expos from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in May:

• Central Westchester

The Information and Community Expos are  tented and outdoors, and are subject to change or cancellation due to the ongoing pandemic.

Bee Ready

• Wear comfortable shoes and make sure shoelaces are tied to prevent slips and falls.
• If steps are difficult, ask the driver to use the lift.
• Use the handrails when entering and exiting the bus.
• Keep the aisle clear by securing personal belongings on your lap, under the seat, or in front of you.
• Bring hand sanitizer for cleaning hands after touching surfaces such as handrails.
• Take your time getting on and off the bus. Wait for the bus to make a full stop before departing your seat.

Bee Steady

• Take your time getting on and off the bus.
• When moving on the bus keep your hands free of cell phones and personal items.
• Sit down if an open seat is available.
• When in your seat, sit back instead of on the edge of your seat. Face forward and keep your feet firmly on the floor.
• If standing, hold the handrails with both hands to secure yourself.

Bee Alert

• Watch your step between the bus and the curb.
• Hold children’s hands on and off the bus.
• Don’t be distracted; be aware of what is going on around you.
• Don’t cross the street in front of a bus. Let the bus leave the stop before crossing the street.
